JAPAN

The acquisitions from Japan come mainly from antiquated book shops, private collections, Japanese publications like the Asahi Graph, Weekly Photo News, Japanese newspapers like the Mainichi Shimbun and the Yomiuri Newspapers. Most of the photographs and documents reflect the period during the Japanese Occupation.

Mainichi Shimbun

Photograph collection of the "Mainichi Shimbun"

This collection features photographs taken during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. Street and commercial scenes of Syonan during the Japanese Occupation; Japanese soldiers training; British POWs; aerial maps of Singapore covering the Singapore harbour; the Raffles Museum etc

A Collection of the "Weekly Photo News" Magazines

The Weekly Photo News magazine collection is another pictorial magazine published during the Japanese Occupation. In this collection, researchers will find particularly interesting photographs of the celebration of the Emperor's birthday; Malayan Sultans on their visit to Syonan; the Artillery unit of the British Army.

Photograph collection of the "Yomiuri Newspaper"

Mainly photographs of the Japanese Occupation, this collection features a portrait of General Hisaichi Terauchi and Japanese soldiers in the jungles of Singapore.

Australia

Records were acquired from the Australian War Memorial. The photographs from the Australian War Memorial were mainly those related to the Second World War.

Collection of the Australian War Memorial

These World War Two photographs depict vividly the action taking place in Singapore during that time. Photographs of soldiers searching through rubble; Brewster Buffalo fighter aircrafts at the Sembawang airfield; Civilians standing by bomb damaged areas; Australian troops arriving in Singapore; the aftermath of a bomb attack by the Japanese; and the Singapore Harbour with the warship Prince of Wales leaving the harbour etc

United Kingdom

Some of the main acquisitions for the year 2000 include records from the Rhodes House Library, The British Library and the Public Records Office.

Collection of the Rhodes House Library

From the Rhodes House Library, comes a series of records on autobiographies of civil servants, their time spent in Singapore, Malaya and other parts of Asia; personal memoirs of prisoners of their evacuation and internment in Singapore during World War II etc.

Air Ministry 9

This record series is acquired from the Public Records Office. This class comprises records of the Deputy Director of Plans in the Directorate of Operations & Intelligence, and from 1939, of the Director of Plans under the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Policy) and Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations). These records concern the operation and strategic planning of the Department before and during World War II.

This record series also acquired from the Public Records Office comprises unregistered Air Ministry papers and branch folders accumulated by the Historical Branch. A large portion of this class consist of papers relating to Word War II.

United States of America

NAS has continued to acquire more records from National Archives & Records Administration (NARA), USA, pertaining to Singapore and the region.
This set of records consists of weekly reports submitted by the different units to provide political, military & psychological analysis and review of Singapore, Malaya and Indonesia, as well as the US diplomatic ties with Singapore & the regional countries.
